Canucks defeat Coyotes on penalty shot in overtime
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Defenseman Ben Hutton scored on a penalty shot at 3:34 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.
Hutton was awarded the penalty shot after being hooked by the Coyotes' Dylan Strome on a breakaway. He scored by deking Arizona goaltender Louis Domingue, then sliding home a backhand through the five-hole.
Daniel Sedin had a power-play goal and an assist for Vancouver who battled back from a 2-0 deficit.
Brandon Sutter also scored for Vancouver (7-10-1).
Brad Richardson and Anthony DeAngelo scored for the Coyotes (5-9-2). It was Arizona's fourth straight loss.
Richardson left the game on a stretcher at 11:23 of the second period and was taken to hospital. He appeared to injure his right leg after taking a hit from Nikita Tryamkin, Vancouver's 6-7 defenseman.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 34 shots for the Canucks. Domingue made 39 saves for Arizona.
It was a battle of the two worst teams in the NHL. Vancouver has three wins in their last 14 games. Arizona is 2-6-2 on the road and has lost five of its last six contests.
The Canucks scored goals 2:13 apart late in the second to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third period.
Richardson opened the scoring for Arizona with 1:22 gone in the second. He took a shot from the top of the faceoff circle that deflected off Canucks defenseman Alex Edler and past Markstrom.
DeAngelo made it 2-0 at 10:45 with Vancouver's Bo Horvat off for holding.
Martin Hanzal controlled the puck at the side of the net and was waiting for Markstrom to commit himself. The puck rolled off Hanzal's stick into the slot, where DeAngelo took a shot that deflected off Markus Granlund and into the net.
The Canucks comeback started at 15:45. Daniel Sedin backhanded a pass from behind the Arizona net that Sutter one-timed past Domingue. It was the third consecutive game Sutter scored a goal.
Daniel Sedin tied the game at 17:58 after Michael Stone was called for interference. Henrik Sedin sent a blind pass from along the boards out to Edler. He faked a shot, then passed to Daniel Sedin, who the puck past Domingue.
Vancouver outshot Arizona 13-11 during a scoreless first period.
The Canucks thought they had scored at 11:56 when Michael Chaput deflected Edler's point shot past Domingue. The goal was disallowed for goaltender interference after a video review showed Chaput held Domingue's stick under his arm.
