Flames 4, Sharks 3 (OT)

Sean Monahan scored 24 seconds into overtime as Calgary skated to its third straight victory to begin its five-game road trip.

Joni Ortio denied Patrick Marleau on a breakaway to preserve a 3-3 tie midway into the third period. In overtime, captain Mark Giordano skated along the blue line and backhanded the puck toward the net before Monahan knocked it in from the doorstep as the Flames improved to 6-2 in overtime this season.

Joe Colborne collected a short-handed goal and an assist while Jiri Hudler and defenseman Dennis Wideman also tallied for Calgary, which has won seven of its last 10. Giordano notched a pair of assists and Ortio finished with 19 saves to improve to 3-0-0 since being recalled from Adirondack of the American Hockey League.

Logan Couture, Joe Thornton and rookie Melker Karlsson each scored in the second period for the Sharks, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 1-0-1 on their season-high seven-game homestand. Marleau, Joe Pavelski and defenseman Justin Braun each notched two assists while Antti Niemi turned aside 19 shots in the setback.

The Flames posted a 2-0 lead after one period, but Couture answered 12 seconds into the second with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle and Thornton cleaned up a loose puck around the net at 2:40. Pavelski's pass caromed off Karlsson's skate and into the net nine minutes into the session to give San Jose its first lead, but Hudler's wrist shot through traffic 2:32 later forged a 3-3 tie.
