Jets 5, Hurricanes 3

Kyle Wellwood recorded a goal and an assist and Andrew Ladd ended up with the game-winner as the Winnipeg Jets broke out for a 5-3 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

Alex Burmistrov, Jim Slater and Evander Kane added goals and Chris Mason made 18 saves for the Jets.

Winnipeg, which came in averaging 1.8 goals and had topped out at three tallies in its first six games, finally treated its new home fans to a breakthrough offensively.

After surrendering two goals to fall into a hole early in the first, the Jets went to work on the power play in the back half of the period. Burmistrov cut it to 2-1 with a wrister and Wellwood sent them into their first break tied when his wrister found its way past Brian Boucher with just two seconds left in the first.

Winnipeg carried that momentum out of the dressing room, taking its first lead when Tanner Glass backhanded a pass down the boards to Slater, who blasted a slap shot from above the right face-off circle past Boucher.

Ladd made it a two-goal lead less than four minutes later, slapping one from the blue line that skipped off the ice and over Boucher’s glove. Kane’s wrister from the doorstep pushed it to 5-2.
